PROMOTING PEACE AND RECONCILIATION IN COMMUNITIES OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF BAMENDA

JPC Bamenda organizes workshops in Ndop and Fundong with the aim of identifying, assessing and consolidating local capacities for peace.

This came as a mitigation strategy to the current socio political crisis in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon which has greatly hampered peace and left devastating effects on the local populations. Embedded in this are local conflicts emanating from discrimination, lack of access to resources, misinformation, misunderstanding, falsehood, ethnic-tribal quarrels and more.

The first workshop took place in Fundong on July 1, 2022 with 29 participants, while the second took place on October 11, 2022 in Ndop with 30 participants. The personalities in attendance included municipal council representatives, Quarter Heads, Religious leaders, JPC members and more. All participants in both communities confessed to missing peace, harmony, social cohesion and freedom of movement and also added that peace has always been a concern for all communities.

Both workshops ended with participants taking the commitment to create awareness within their various groups on their capacity as communities to ensure their local peace

REDUCE THE INCIDENTS OF GENDER BASED VIOLENCE OF VULNERABLE PERSONS AFFECTED BY THE ONGOING ANGLOPHONE CRISIS IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF BAMENDA

Within the framework of the project ‘Reduce the Incidents of Gender Based Violence of Vulnerable Persons Affected by the Ongoing Anglophone Crisis in the Archdiocese of Bamenda, 6 communities (Bafut, Mankon, Azire, Bayele, Bambui and Akum) are engaged in a football competition with the aim of combating GBV, promoting social cohesion and peace within local communities of the Bamenda Archdiocese.

Prior to the competition, a workshop on GBV was organized, involving over 30 leaders from the 6 selected communities which resulted in the sensitization of over 1500 persons in all 6 communities and the identification of over 50 vulnerable cases for support.

Elderly men and women, young boys and girls have turned out in their numbers to take part in the competition while staying conscious to the fact that it is a battle against GBV, not against each other.

So far, social cohesion and peace have been enhanced within these communities, while the community members have pledged to continue with the sensitization and sporting activities even after the project is ended.
